Acme Cafe Meringues

I visited Acme Café with a single target in mind: their lemon meringue pie. I’m doing some meringue “research” (no, really, it’s for potential future recipes), and Acme is purported to have the best lemon meringue pie in town. In fact, it’s been featured on the cover of Vancouver magazine as part of their list of 101 Things to Taste (2011).

It was quite the successful Acme outing. Not only did I claim their last piece of lemon meringue pie, but they had two other types of meringue as well! I sampled their chocolate dipped orange meringues as well as their chocolate meringue cookies with white chocolate chunks.

Cafe Regalade Smoked herring

I was shocked to see Café Regalade on Groupon. They’ve been on my radar for some time, have great reviews, and I thought they were doing quite well. Perhaps it’s due to the recent construction along 4th Ave., which is probably hurting all of the businesses in that area? I don’t know, but obviously I jumped at the chance to eat there at a discount.

Café Regalade is a little French bistro in Kitsilano, sister restaurant to West Vancouver’s La Regalade. It is operated by Steeve Rayé, son of Alain Rayé, two-time Michelin star winner, and owner of the West Van location.

Tomahawk Restaurant Chief Capilano Burger

This North Vancouver restaurant has been serving breakfast and burgers since 1926, making it the oldest family-run eatery in Canada. In the past few years, it has gotten some media attention. It was featured on two Food Network shows: Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with Guy Fieri, and where I first heard of it: You Gotta Eat Here with John Catucci. A lot of the restaurants on these shows tend to focus on quantity over quality, so I was a little skeptical. But after seeing their commitment to organic, I was intrigued.

We only buy and serve 100% premium certified ORGANIC ground beef from The Blue Goose Cattle Company!

That means they ensure: No growth-hormones or antibiotics are ever administered to the herd. the animals are free to range and graze on organic pastures. The cattle receive a finishing feed of 100% organically grown grains.

Our 100% pure beef wieners are served on our special baked buns.

Yes, the cows are not 100% grass-fed, but for a diner I’d say those standards are pretty decent. So, after a hike on the North Shore, I figured it was time to check this place out.

The Walrus and the Carpenter Lamb Gelatine

Restaurants like The Walrus and the Carpenter are the reason I dine out. It’s easy to miss the small sign at the entrance to this lively restaurant that’s tucked away at the back of a former ship-parts factory, at the end of a long, narrow hallway. As you near the restaurant though, you hear the din of happy chatter. Walking into the Walrus and the Carpenter is like a breath of fresh air. The space is bright, cheerful, and inviting.

If you’re into seafood, you will adore the menu. First of all, it’s an oyster bar, so there are oysters galore for you to choose from, nicely showcased in buckets of ice behind the bar. There is a bevy of fish and shellfish dishes on the menu (sardines, trout, mackerel, herring, scallops, you  name it). At this point, you might be wondering if I simply observed at this dinner, since I don’t eat much seafood. Have no fear – there are enough meat and veggie options to choose from as well if you prefer land-based foods. In fact, I ate an entire meal without consuming anything from the sea…

Andina Beef Heart Kabobs

In the first part of this post, I reviewed: Evoe, Pearl Bakery, Nong’s Khao Man Gai, and St. Jack. The culinary adventures continue here as I comment on my visits to Podnah’s Pit BBQ, Salt & Straw, Andina, Tasty n Sons, and St. Honoré Boulangerie, as well as Cacao and Stumptown Coffee.

It was a gorgeous weekend for visiting Portland, and one of the best things about checking out restaurants in a town you’re not familiar with is exploring all the various neighbourhoods. One of my favourites was Nobb Hill, home of Salt & Straw and St. Honore Boulangerie (as well as many other spots I didn’t visit). The neighbourhood is lined with cute shops, restaurants and cafes, and also gorgeous trees like the magnolia one below. Overall, a great weekend, and I look forward to returning and eating my way through more of Portland’s awesome food scene.
