Elimination Diet Meal Ideas

An elimination diet does just that, it eliminates a lot of food. A reader asked a pretty valid question – what’s there left to eat? Or, more to the point, what did a typical day look like for me in terms of meals?

It was actually  quite varied, considering. Honestly, an elimination diet just looks like a very strict paleo diet (i.e. all the regular primal stuff plus no dairy) minus a few items (mainly eggs and nightshades). So when you look at it like that, it’s really not that difficult, especially for meals like lunch and dinner. Just ditch the cheese, cream, and eggs, and you’re good to go in terms of most paleo recipes. Think meat + veggies.

So, for lunch/dinner, I typically had veggies plus one of the following: a roast, steak, or burger. I purposely kept the recipes simple so that they wouldn’t include any dairy. Think prime rib – other than salt and pepper, and maybe a little bit of mustard, it doesn’t require much else. Ditto steak. And burgers are super simple. I’m also used to eating the same thing several days in a row (batch cooking), so it’s not much of an issue for me.

Eliminating eggs was probably the hardest. I love eggs for breakfast, and I also missed making frittata. For breakfast I mainly had freshly prepared sausages from Whole Foods, that I’d boil or fry up with coconut oil. Make sure to check the sausage ingredients (especially for nightshades).

The one thing I found difficult was eating enough fat – I relied mostly on coconut oil, as well as some beef tallow. But considering I usually slather copious amounts of butter on everything, I don’t think it was enough.

Here are a few recipes I cooked while on the elimination diet: braised beef and onions, eye of round roast, olive, garlic, & lemon chicken (careful if you’ve decided to eliminate citrus, I goofed).

Have you done an elimination diet? What did your meals look like?

I did an elimination diet but it was before I went primal… at the time I was eating lots of rice (d’uh!) veggies, fruit, & trying single foods… I ended up vegan for a few months and felt the worst I’ve ever felt in my entire life. Finally found out about primal/paleo (no dairy/nuts/sugar) & I’m in the best health/fitness level of my life!

It’s great that you recognized that being vegan wasn’t working for you and changed ways, even greater that you found primal/paleo! :)
