Sweet Obsession Lamon Dacquoise

Over the years, I’ve eaten a lot of cakes from this little bakery (both pre and post paleo). Sweet Obsession has a very large selection, and you can pre-order cakes as well, with all of their offerings listed on their website. Quality-wise, I’d say they’re definitely above your average bakery, but can’t compare to the likes of Thomas Haas and Thierry, which I now frequent instead.

Probably the best thing about Sweet Obsession is that they have several gluten-free options, which are always welcome, lest you find yourself eating the same birthday cake every year. The gluten-free options include: black & white mousse, lemon dacquoise, mocha dacquoise, chocolate obsession, and Concorde. If given 3 days notice, they can also make the following gluten-free: triple chocolate mousse, triple berry mousse, and peanut butter chocolate mousse. I’ve had all of the mousses except for the peanut butter one, and they were quite tasty.

On my last visit, as part of my current meringue “research”, I came specifically for the dacquoise – I got the lemon. It was very good, nice texture. The dacquoise itself wasn’t overly sweet, but the lemon buttercream was a tad too sweet for my liking. The presentation was pretty. On a whim, I also bought a salted caramel, which was nice and gooey, but could’ve been less sweet and more salty.

Sweet Obsession is a very busy bakery with some limited seating to enjoy your treats. Trafalgar’s bistro next door also serves all of Sweet Obsession’s cakes. Service was okay, but not very friendly and not that knowledgeable. When I asked if any of the cookies are gluten-free, I was told no. But the website says otherwise, and I remember seeing the cloud cookies there (other gf: almond chocolate-dipped florentines).

Overall, a nice bakery to check out if you’re in the area, with an assortment of gluten-free treats.
