Yew-Steak-&-Eggs

Yew is located in the Four Seasons Hotel and is quite the happening spot. The crowd there seems older, with a lot of business people and tourists toting bright pink Holt Renfrew shopping bags from the adjacent Pacific Centre Mall. The room is grand and bright, with tall ceilings and nice details. And it seems continually busy with throngs of people coming and going. I even spotted Christina from The Real Housewives of Vancouver sitting at the bar. Apparently she’s a regular. It’s that kinda place.

A friend and I stopped in for lunch before hitting up Pacific Centre. The location is quite convenient if you’re the shopping type, which I’m not. I was more excited about trying a new place to eat than joining the mobs of frantic shoppers trying to desperately find that perfect last minute Christmas gift.

Service was good. Friendly and professional. It’s always a bonus when the server has a sense of humour. We each ordered the ‘Steak and eggs’ (Braised Short Rib, Sunny Side Eggs, Smoked Cheddar, Arrabiata, Arugula, Potatoes, Braising Jus).

The food came so quickly that the server joked apologetically that they’re not trying to rush us. The dish was great, with bold flavors, especially the sauce (arrabiato means angry in Italian – the name of the sauce is due to the heat of the chili peppers). The Short ribs could’ve been a little more tender – they weren’t melt-in-your-mouth, but still pretty good. The eggs were about 30 seconds over done (the entire yolk didn’t cascade over the dish when pierced with a fork). The presentation was lovely – the eggs very prettily crowned the plate.

At $20, I feel the dish was overpriced. I think $16 or $17 would’ve been a more fair price. At $20, it makes more sense to  pay another $9 and get the 3 course brunch (on weekends). However, neither of us were hungry enough to go for the app and dessert.

Pretty good first visit. I wasn’t wowed, but was intrigued enough to consider returning. Perhaps for the $29 brunch or, more likely, for cocktails and dessert – both of which I’ve heard great things about.
