1) Another reason to axe smart meters:

Hacking Expert David Chalk Joins Urgent Call to Halt Smart Grid:

“100% certainty of catastrophic failure of energy grid within 3 years unless course is changed”

2) Bridal Hunger Games: Brides wanting to lose weight before their big day are opting to walk around with their nose hooked up to a feeding tube. Hey, at least they’re not getting fed any carbs….

It uses a nasogastric tube (a tube that goes through the nose and down the esophagus into the stomach) to provide all nourishment, with no carbohydrates, for 10 days. Dr. Di Pietro said body weight is lost quickly through ketosis, the state in which the body burns fat rather than sugar. Patients at his office are monitored during the 10-day period for things like constipation, bad breath and dizziness.

3) Dental X-Rays Linked To Common Brain Tumor, Study Finds.

The new research links regular dental imaging to one of the most common types of brain tumors and suggests adults who were regularly exposed to X-rays in the past, before dosages were lowered, might have an especially pronounced risk.

4) What Are the 26 Ingredients in a Typical School Lunch Burger? Wow – and that’s just in the patty. It was very entertaining how they tried to make every one of the 26 ingredients seem healthy. You’d think this was a parody, sadly it wasn’t. But by showing that the burger had 26 ingredients, and referring to processed food, they did get their point across. Props to the lady for being able to be so enthusiastic and cheerful throughout this video. I would’ve lost it at the 3rd ingredient, and it would’ve been all downhill from there.

5) According to @CavemanDoctor via twitter,

LDL cholesterol significantly overestimated when triglycerides (common to all low-carbers) are low: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18426324

6) Mom’s Obesity, Diabetes Linked with Autism and Developmental Delays

Obese mothers were 67% more likely than mothers of normal weight and with no metabolic disorders to have a child with autism, and they were more than twice as likely to have a child with another developmental disorder — a delay in speech delay, perhaps, or a failure to reach developmental milestones at the appropriate age, according to the study published Monday in Pediatrics.

7) Allergic Reactions Enhanced by Cell Phone Use.

Cellular phone use for one continuous hour exacerbates allergic responses to dust and pollen in adults with eczema, according to a new study in International Archives of Allergy and Immunology (2002;129:348–50).

8) Andrew Zimmern’s Five Foods That Can Change the World are all paleo friendly:

donkey, little fish, your own veggies, game birds, and offal

9) Sheryl Sandberg Leaves Work at 5:30. Why Can’t You? Good question.

I walk out of this office every day at 5:30 so I’m home for dinner with my kids at 6:00, and interestingly, I’ve been doing that since I had kids. I did that when I was at Google, I did that here, and I would say it’s not until the last year, two years, that I’m brave enough to talk about it publicly. Now I certainly wouldn’t lie, but I wasn’t running around giving speeches on it.

10) To Heal, First Eat. Doctors Learn to Cook Healthy, ‘Crave-able’ Foods. Wow, this is refreshing (now I just hope that the cooking doesn’t veer towards veganism):

“I want to help my patients not need my services,” Dr. Fox said as he chopped rosemary for a mustard-crusted seared lamb loin. “I’d love to be put out of work.”
